How It Started

In 1968, Transmit America® began like many businesses: with dreams and small beginnings in a basement office. The start-up seized a ground-floor opportunity with a new technology — the facsimile machine, or "fax" as it came to be known. This technology enabled rapid document transmission, far superior to the then-common teletype system, allowing images to be sent through a standard telephone line.
Discovering Our Niche
Our journey into the trucking industry began when we discovered that Wisconsin sent trucking permits by teletype to truck stops. A successful transmission of an Ohio permit to a railroad salvage company marked our decision to focus exclusively on the trucking sector. At that time, ordering, paying for, and receiving permits took several days. The faster fax technology motivated us to find even quicker methods to deliver permits, leading to the development of efficient payment systems and a multiple fax network.
Revolutionizing Permit Delivery
We collaborated with states to transition to fax, develop better application processes, and create new payment methods. Establishing relationships with truck stops in Nebraska, Kansas, Missouri, Iowa, and Wyoming helped us drastically reduce turnaround times. Soon, drivers could call the state, enjoy a cup of coffee, and find their permits waiting at the truck stop.
Pioneering Technology
Our innovative fax network efforts led to the end of teletype services in the permitting industry and helped spread fax technology throughout the trucking sector and beyond. As our business grew, we established a Permit Service to assist truckers with permit applications, requiring the collection of critical data. This need spurred us to adopt early computer technology, hire a programmer, and develop our first permitting software system, greatly improving service accuracy and turnaround times. Today, our programs are powered by RAD BACKWARE®.
Our Legacy and Future
With over 56 years of history since our founding on May 2, 1968, Transmit America® has consistently provided excellent service to the trucking industry. We developed a business model and process that benefited both state agencies and truckers, created a distribution network that supported truck stops and truckers, and adopted computers to enhance accuracy and efficiency. As we continue to refine our processes and systems, we are committed to delivering even better quality services, greater efficiencies, and faster delivery times.
